Maintaing your gutters

Cleaning and Maintaining Your Gutters

Gutters play an important role in protecting your roof, walls, foundation and landscape by controlling the flow of rainwater to reduce the risk of water damage.

If left unattended, gutters can quickly become clogged with debris, leaves and sticks that will eventually cause your roof to leak, exposing you to costly water damage. Over time the build up of rotting leaves, mold and other debris accumulating in your gutter will also become an attraction to pests such as mice and rats, cockroaches, mosquitoes, snakes, and other pesky insects. To avoid the headaches and added costs to remove these unwanted pests, or having to repair damaged gutters, it is strongly advised to adhere to a schedule for regular cleaning and maintenance of your gutters.

How often should my gutters be cleaned?

A good rule to follow would be to clean your gutters every 2-3 months but this can vary with factors like the weather, your surroundings, your location and certain other influences. For example: If you are in an open area surrounded by trees with falling leaves, or exposed to a high level of windblown debris then the chances are you will need to clean your gutters more frequently than others who are in a more protected environment.

Using gutter protection covers

Mesh covers or screens on your gutters can significantly reduce the need for gutter maintenance. Although  it is a good solution it does not entirely eliminate the need for maintenance. The frequency of regular maintenance  will depend on the quality and type of the cover you choose for your specific location. Even with gutter protectors carrying out regular inspections is still a good idea.

Should I clean my own gutters or hire someone?

Although cleaning gutters is a task most homeowners can do themselves, it may not be worth the risk when you are required to work at heights. A simple slip, or a fall from a ladder can easily result in serious injury, or even death. Also, employing a garden worker to clean your gutters could have serious legal and financial consequences if such an injury were to occur.
